Self-actualisation

Rembrandt, self-portrait on the age of 34

Self-actualisation can take a whole life-time. Some great artists have fixed this process in images on different times in their life, as in these self-portraits of Rembrandt. The first he painted at the age of 34, in a very successful period of his life. He saw himself as a virtuoso renaissance-painter and grand-seigneur. The second self-portrait he painted at about the age of 60. With this painting he confirmed his identity in his art and portrayed himself as a painter with in his hands the instruments of his craft.
